Surprisingly Fun Times With Voltaire

Favorite quotes are kind of hard for me because I never really write them down or save them away. Initially I was going to go with something Doctor Who-centric because obviously I love that show. This one immediately came to mind since I had saved it on Pinterest:

Totally one of my favorites, however, I can’t really pick a quote at random from the series without spending days poring through all the episodes I’ve seen because I’m sure there are better ones I’m just not remembering.

So this brings me to the one I chose… In recent years, my friends and I have seemingly collected a bunch of ‘famous last words’ through various conversations we’ve had on the topic. There are just loads of really great ones out there and it seems to be a semi-morbid fascination of ours. However, my hands down favorite was always this one:

“Now, now my good man, this is no time for making enemies.” –Voltaire on his deathbed being asked by a priest to renounce Satan.

Last words. Ever.

Voltaire was such a baller! Who even knew? Certainly not me, because I may or may not have really bullshit my way through the Candide section of AP Lit in high school by reading portions of it during the actual class just to get by in the discussions…

{I mean look at this creepy-ass cover!}

I’m beginning to think I should go back to his works in a non-educational setting because clearly this man was pretty intriguing. Also, after a quick wikipedia search (just to make sure he didn’t like murder prostitutes or anything of that ilk), I found out that he was all about freedom of religion, freedom of expression and separation of church and state. Can’t complain about that!

Anyway, I’m sure I’ll think of a better quote almost immediately after I publish this, but Voltaire’s last words are definitely my favorite!
