neptune's net

After a sunset hike last weekend with some friends, we decided to hit up one of our favorite little places to reward ourselves for doing some sort of physical activity: Neptune's Net.  It's a little seafood shack on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu that is conveniently situated for hikers in the Santa Monica Mountains.

We've been there a handful of times and always opt for the fried stuff, but apparently (apparently!) there is also a steamed seafood section.  Go figure.  Also, we always seem to get there right before closing, probably because hiking by the ocean as the sun goes down is the best, and they are always out of crabcakes by then.  This makes me sad.  However, I happily ordered some fried calamari, which quickly dissipated my crabcake angst.

Now, I have had the privilege of eating seafood in the Mediterranean... so I can't say it's the greatest seafood I've ever had (but I still haven't had those elusive crabcakes, so who knows there!).  But that's not what you're looking for when you come here.  It's greasy, but not too greasy, fried seafood that's a perfect way to end a day hiking or gallivanting by the ocean.  You can grab a beer, warm up by the space heaters and enjoy handfuls of french fries dipped in tartar sauce (the best).

I mean, if we're in Malibu... this is where we're eating.  So it's great.  Cause I said so.

Oh and take a canyon road (23, Malibu Canyon, Topanga Canyon) from the 101 to get there or get back.  Trust.

  4. Sometimes you don't need the best food, just the right kind of food. After a day of hiking that place sounds fantastic. I love calmari.
